Pan Trinbago today mourns the loss of steelpan stalwart Francis Wickham. Wickham aka the “Iron Man” earned his moniker in the 1940’s as a founding member and iron man of the group of young musicians called “Oval Boys” which later became known as Invaders. The pan veteran passed away on Thursday 5th July, after a prolonged illness.98 At the time of his passing, Wickham was an active member in CAL Invaders Elder Association and was the main man in their rhythm section for Panorama and Carnival on the road. In 2008, Francis Wickham was inducted into the Sunshine Awards Hall of Fame, USA, as the oldest living “Iron Man” in Trinidad & Tobago. Two (2) years later, he was presented with the Sydney Gollop Award for Pan Pioneers at Pan Trinbago’s Annual Awards Ceremony at the National Academy for the Performing Arts, in Port of Spain, Trinidad. Pan Trinbago extends sympathy to the Wickham family and the steelpan fraternity during this time of bereavement. |
